The roles of alcohol, racial language and cleanliness in defending Finnish culture from outside encroachment at Colonia Finlandesa, Argentina (Master's thesis project)

The aim of the thesis is to look at what roles alcohol, racial language and cleanliness played in in a small, semi-isolated Finnish colony in subtropical Argentina to reinforce Finnish identity. The information collected for the thesis has been mainly through interviews done in 1977, 1978, 1983, 1984, 1988, 1998 and 2007.

Asiantuntemus - Specialization

Since I grew up in three cultures ­ Finnish, Argentinean and Southern Californian ­ I've naturally been interested in issues like multiculturalism and minorities. I've worked as a journalist/foreign correspondent in countries like Finland, Argentina, Colombia and Italy for about 20 years for newspapers like the Financial Times of London. I've lectured on South American media relations at Jyväskylä University.
