About the conference

In migration research, the concept of vulnerability is often used to refer to individuals and groups whose rights are perceived to be at risk, such as asylum seekers, undocumented migrants, or migrant children. Yet, in legal practice, migrants’ vulnerability is rarely recognized. As Salazar & Smart (2011) note, attempts to control and restrict movement are just as characteristic of the era in which we live as is growing global mobility. The trend in many European countries (and beyond) is to further securitize migration, to frame migration as a risk, and to increasingly limit legal migration routes. These are processes than can create vulnerability by pushing migrants to the margins of society and to precarious migration routes. At the same time, we have witnessed resistance by groups that are often deemed vulnerable, such as asylum seekers who call for just asylum policies and cessation of deportations. Through two keynote talks and a panel discussion by international and Finnish experts, this symposium explores ways in which nation-states and their various actors produce vulnerable positions in contemporary Europe.

The symposium is organized by three research projects funded by the Academy of Finland: Refugee Journeys: Narratives of Forced Mobilities (2018–2023), Family Separation, Migration Status, and Everyday Security: Experiences and Strategies of Vulnerable Migrants (2018‒2021), and Action-Oriented Research on Asylum Seekers’ Deportability (2018‒2021).

The event is part of the symposium series “Rethinking (Im)Mobilities of Vulnerable Migrants” at the MIF (2019–2021).

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Dr. Johanna Leinonen (johanna.leinonen(a)utu.fi, 0400 296 909).
