Remittances: Economic and non-economic contributions sent by international migrants

Helsinki, 8.5.2018. Swedish School of Social Science at the University of Helsinki

March 12, 2018
The Migration Institute of Finland and the Swedish School of Social Science at the University of Helsinki are organizing a seminar on remittances on 8.5.2018 in Helsinki. The idea of the seminar is to look at remittances from a Nordic perspective. We are interested in:

  • Defining remittances within a Nordic context: Operationalization of the term in Finnish, Danish, Norwegian or in Swedish
  • Current studies focusing on remittances within a Nordic context
  • The positive and negative impacts of remittances for transnational families and/or communities
  • Remittances as part of the migration-development nexus
  • The impact of reverse remittances on the welfare of migrants and host societies.

The seminar will consist of a keynote speech on remittances from Marta Bivand Erdal (Senior researcher at PRIO) and round-table discussions in which researchers and other actors in the field can present their own research and work related to remittances. The keynote speech will be in English and the round-table discussions will be multilingual: there will be a Finnish and an English discussion.

We are planning to publish an anthology or a special issue of Siirtolaisuus-Migration journal on this same topic. The decision and selection for the publication will take place after the workshop. Please, submit your abstract (max. 200 words) and let us know if you are interested in participating in the special issue latest by 30.3.2018. The language of the abstract can be Finnish, Swedish or English.
